About

Dr. Sheng is an expert in the processing and characterization of polymer matrix composites and nanocomposites, as well as polymer and organic chemistry. Now, he works as a postdoctoral research associate and conducts research under Dr. Kessler’s direction in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Iowa State University.

His research fields include multifunctional- and nano-composites, materials with self-healing functionality, development of new manufacturing techniques for polymer composites, and the evaluation of these materials using experimental mechanics techniques and thermal analysis.

He received his Ph.D. from the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering at the Iowa State University in Dec. 2008. He worked as a graduate research assistant under the direction of Dr. Kessler. His thesis research was including the development of “self-healing” composite materials and high temperature polymer composites, and received the Excellence Research Award.

He has published over a dozen journal publications, holds 1 patent (pending), has presented many talks at national and international meetings, and serves as a frequent reviewer in his field.

Dr. Sheng grew up in Xi’an, China and obtained his BS and MS degree in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2000 and 2003. He also obtained a BS degree in Business Administration from USTC in 2000.

He is a good photographer with +10 year experiences and still sticks on films, an active tennis player with a 4.0 NTRP skill level, and a motorcycle rider, YAMAHA R6.
